The Start of the Kya Chua Home Care Journey
The Kya Chua home care journey began when she joined Family Resource Home Care at just 19 years old. She admitted she “hopped from job to job and dreaded every clock-in,” unsure of what her long-term path would look like. When she applied to Family Resource Home Care, her very first shift was a 12-hour overnight dementia case, and she was “terrified” (she says this while laughing).
“I was nervous to do caregiving because it was a long overnight shift, and the office told me that the client could be aggressive,” Kya recalled with a laugh. But what she found was the opposite. When the client fell asleep, Kya peeked at her bookshelf and saw titles by Gloria Steinem and other feminist writers. “I realized the client wasn’t mean or aggressive, she was just independent and needed help and was working through that transition.”
That perspective shift changed everything. Kya worked with that same client for a year and a half, forming a bond she describes as being “like family.” During this time, Kya’s journey into home care deepened: “I saw a lot of things lacking in the community for this client, and I felt like I could help, but I needed to grow too.” That realization eventually led her to pursue the Client Care Supervisor role.
Now three months into the Client Care Supervisor position, she says, “I love it, and I’m thriving.”
Thriving as a Client Care Supervisor and Seeing the Bigger Picture
Stepping into leadership brought visibility into an entire side of the industry she hadn’t seen before. “I’ve learned so much about how home care works and how insurance works,” she said, noting that this knowledge is fueling her long-term goals.
Her dream?
“To grow as far as I can in Family Resource Home Care and then be a senior advocate for the community.”
With her cosmetology background, she’s especially passionate about unmet needs she consistently sees: “Foot care and skin care are lacking. I notice it everywhere.”
This passion and awareness continue to shape Kya’s journey into home care and her determination to serve older adults with dignity and compassion. Each step of the Kya Chua home care journey continues to shape her purpose and leadership style.
Supporting Clients Through Honest Connection
Kya believes her caregiving experience keeps her grounded and empathetic. “It keeps the fire lit underneath me,” she shared. Meeting with clients reminds her why this work matters and helps her “level set with them and understand what they are needing.”
She loves being able to walk families through the process, especially those nervous about starting care. “I try to give them a better picture of what’s happening on the backend and how the whole industry works,” she said.
Her firsthand knowledge allows her to build care plans with clarity, transparency, and compassion, something she views as essential in her Client Care Supervisor role.
Advice for Families and Caregivers: “Humanize the Experience”
Kya’s advice to families considering care is simple and honest:
“Do the research, make sure the agency is reputable, and try a few caregivers before giving up on the idea. Sometimes there are bad apples, but the majority are good.”
To caregivers, especially new ones or those who feel unsure, she speaks from the heart:
“On bad days, see clients as a person ‘my age’ and get into why they might be behaving that way.”
And she’s refreshingly candid about her early fears. “I was scared of the elderly population and avoided it at all costs,” she admitted. “But I’ve done a full 180. I really didn’t know what I was going to do before this.” Seeing clients as humans first, not tasks, was one of the most transformative lessons of the Kya Chua home care journey.
That mindset shift, humanizing clients and understanding their emotions, became one of the most meaningful parts of Kya’s journey into home care.
