Laura’s journey with Family Resource Home Care is a testament to the power of dedication and passion. Her career began in early childhood development, teaching preschool for six years. However, the demands of balancing a full-time job with raising two young children led her to seek a new path. She found her opportunity through a Seattle Times Newspaper classified ad, which led her to become a Staffing Coordinator at the Seattle Branch. Laura vividly recalls her initial thoughts: “Wow, how am I ever going to keep straight 45 schedules?” Despite the challenge, she found her role both natural and exhilarating.

Building a Foundation

Laura was the third employee at Family Home Care and quickly found herself immersed in a variety of roles. From conducting caregiver interviews and staffing to managing payroll and billing, she embraced every aspect of her job. “It’s been such a fun opportunity and I feel so blessed to have gotten in on the ground floor, to be able to have a hand in developing processes and watch departments developing.” The early days of the company were filled with excitement and growth, and Laura felt privileged to be part of it. Her adaptability and dedication soon saw her transition from Staffing Coordinator to Branch Manager at the Bellevue Branch in 2008, where she was responsible for client care duties and branch activities.

Rising Through the Ranks

By 2013, Laura sought new challenges and broader opportunities. She decided to step away from Family Resource Home Care, but it wasn’t long before the company reached out to her again. At that time, she was caring for her mother, who had moved into her home due to Parkinson’s and dementia. Balancing her caregiving responsibilities with a demanding job was challenging, so when Family Resource Home Care offered her a Regional Vice President role in the Puget Sound market, she accepted. This new role allowed her to be closer to home and better meet her family’s needs. Reflecting on this period, Laura shared, “After caring for my mom, it certainly allowed me to put into action what was previously principle.”

Bringing Personal Experience to Professional Excellence

Laura’s personal experience caring for her mother has profoundly influenced her professional approach. Certified in gerontology, she combines her academic knowledge with real-world application. “It has allowed me a very unique perspective when I talk to clients because she’s experienced this first-hand.” This unique perspective enhances her ability to empathize with clients and understand the challenges families face. Her journey from her initial Staffing Coordinator to her current role has equipped her with a deep sense of empathy and understanding, enabling her to support both clients and caregivers effectively.

Guiding and Supporting Caregivers

Now, as Senior Vice President – Operations, Laura is committed to supporting and guiding caregivers to provide exceptional service. Her firsthand experience allows her to offer valuable insights and practical advice. “My advice for someone who may be considering caregiving as a profession would be don’t doubt yourself; you are capable of more than what you realize you are.” She encourages caregivers to trust in their abilities and approach their work with empathy, always considering how they would want to be treated in a similar situation. Laura emphasizes the importance of asking clients about their preferences and needs, fostering an environment of open communication and personalized care.

Laura’s Words of Wisdom

Laura also encourages families exploring home care services to educate themselves about available options. Often, home care is overlooked due to perceived costs, but Laura highlights the importance of seeking information and exploring various ways to subsidize these services. “We are truly a resource to the community. If that means we can staff a caregiver or point you in the direction to better support your needs, then I’ve done what I needed to do.”

Embracing Challenges and Finding Fulfillment

Despite the challenges that come with home care, Laura finds immense satisfaction in her work. “You can have some really challenging days in home care, but you usually always walk away feeling satisfied and fulfilled.” Her journey from a Staffing Coordinator to Senior Vice President – Operations is a story of growth, resilience, and a deep commitment to making a difference in the lives of clients and caregivers. Her leadership continues to inspire and drive the mission of FRHC, ensuring exceptional care and support for all those they serve.
