A Home Care Journey in Gresham Rooted in Family

Every inspiring home care journey in Gresham starts with a personal story, and for Emily Fallon, that story began at home. Nearly eight years ago, her grandfather had a stroke. Emily had never done caregiving before, but she stepped up to provide care.

“Taking care of my grandfather for about a year and a half until he passed was what broke me into caregiving,” Emily explained. That experience not only introduced her to the demands of care but also revealed the strength and compassion she carried.

Afterward, she transitioned into professional caregiving. At first, she worked with private clients without an agency. Later, she joined Home Care Heroes—an organization that eventually became part of Family Resource Home Care in early 2025. “I kept caregiving for three weeks after the purchase,” she said, “but then I applied for the Caregiver Manager role and was offered the position.”

Carrying Experience into Leadership

Now serving as a Caregiver Manager, Emily uses her own background to guide the caregivers she supervises. “The biggest thing that comes to mind is that, because I’ve been a caregiver, I keep that in mind when scheduling and making client-caregiver matches,” she shared.

She remembers her own firsts vividly—like the first time she had to change a catheter. “I was struck with fear,” she admitted, “so now I can see that same fear in other caregivers. I want to help them through it with training and encouragement.”

Emily leads caregiver orientations and makes sure new hires hear real-world advice. She tells them, “Take your lunch when your client is sleeping—it helps you feel like you’re accomplishing tasks while still caring for them.” This practical wisdom has become part of how she supports caregivers in their day-to-day challenges.

Advice for Clients and Families

Emily’s inspiring home care journey in Gresham has also given her a unique perspective on how families view care. To clients, she emphasizes that Family Resource Home Care’s leadership “is open, candid, and helpful—and that bleeds down to the clients.” She believes the supportive culture within the agency directly benefits the people receiving care.

She also reassures families who may feel hesitant about asking for help. “Clients may think they’re asking too much or bothering people, but as human beings, we all need each other. Home care isn’t an exception,” Emily explained. She even likens finding the right caregiver to dating: “It might be hard at first, but with patience, you’ll find the right match.”

Encouraging Caregivers to Grow

For those stepping into caregiving, Emily wants them to know it’s a multi-faceted role. “It’s not just about going into a home and taking care of someone,” she said. “You can be part of the backend that helps people too.”

She encourages caregivers to try their best while also managing expectations. “Don’t set your expectations so high that you discourage yourself. With training and support, caregiving isn’t as scary as it seems.”

A Path She Never Planned—But Loves

Emily admits her career path didn’t go as planned. She attended Portland State University, but her degree had nothing to do with this field. “We have it in our heads about how our life should be, but it’s okay to shift,” she reflected. What she studied in college might remain a hobby, but caregiving became her calling.

She summed it up best when she said, “If you’re doing something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. It was a weird roundabout way to get here, but I’m happy I ended up here.”

Her inspiring home care journey in Gresham continues as she grows within Family Resource Home Care—supporting caregivers, helping families, and proving that even unexpected paths can lead to meaningful, fulfilling work.
