A Truly Inspiring Home Care Journey
Alicia Espinosa’s passion for home care began at a young age when she became a client herself. “I was only 15 when I broke my back. I was wheelchair-bound for two years and totally reliant on others,” she shared. That experience gave her a deep appreciation for the challenges clients face when both mind and body don’t cooperate.
After recovering, Alicia cared for her grandparents and saw firsthand how powerful it was for them to remain at home. “I really understood the difference between staying at home and going to a facility,” she explained. “That experience got me engaged in home care and gave me a passion for it.” Her inspiring home care journey was just beginning.
From Caregiver to Caregiver Manager
Alicia transformed her personal experiences into a career. “After my grandparents passed, I worked for another agency as a caregiver and Med Tech. Within three months I moved into scheduling and care coordination, but I would still fill in as a caregiver as needed,” she shared. Those early roles kept her connected to the daily realities of caregiving and helped her build a strong foundation of empathy and understanding.
When Alicia relocated to Eugene, she joined Family Resource Home Care as a Caregiver Manager. Within a year, she stepped into the Branch Manager role at the Portland West branch located in Tigard, Oregon, where she now leads her team with compassion. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I know how humbling it is being the client. Then I experienced the caregiver side, and it gave me the ability to support both clients and caregivers and truly understand what their needs are.” This ability to see both perspectives is a hallmark of her inspiring home care journey.
Guiding Caregivers and Clients with Understanding
Alicia knows firsthand how challenging—and rewarding—caregiving can be. “I know the challenges caregivers go through—the long hours, balancing work and personal life, and the fulfillment that comes from compassionate care,” she explained. “Because I’ve been there, I can support them in a way that’s genuine.”
She also understands the frustrations clients sometimes face. “When clients have frustrations about their mind or body, I resonate with them. It creates a common ground and builds trust quickly,” she said. Her empathy allows her to build strong, trusting relationships that define her leadership style.
Equally important, Alicia values her administrative staff. “They’re a huge piece of the puzzle,” she noted. By recognizing the contributions of caregivers, clients, and staff alike, Alicia ensures her branch runs with both efficiency and compassion—key lessons drawn from her inspiring home care journey.
Alicia’s Advice for Clients and Caregivers
Alicia believes that both clients and caregivers need reassurance, understanding, and encouragement to make the care relationship truly successful. To clients, she emphasizes the importance of trust, reminding them, “Trust that your caregiver’s purpose is to support you, not replace your independence.” Drawing from her own experience of once relying on others for even the simplest tasks, Alicia understands how vulnerable it can feel to let someone into your daily life. Her perspective is that caregivers are there to walk alongside clients, not to take over.
To caregivers, she offers words of affirmation that speak to the heart of the profession: “Know that the role is deeply valued. It’s not just a job—you’re changing the lives you’re caring for.” She wants every caregiver to recognize the profound impact they make, not only in the lives of clients but also in the strength and dignity they help preserve. By weaving both perspectives together, Alicia encourages a culture of mutual respect, trust, and appreciation at Family Resource Home Care in Portland West.
Redefining Leadership in Home Care
When asked about her leadership philosophy, Alicia spoke from the heart. “Leadership isn’t about a title—it’s about service, empathy, and listening,” she said. “Too often people listen to respond instead of listening to understand. If I can listen a little deeper, I can truly understand what’s needed and how it can affect everyone involved.”
Her approach has shaped the culture she’s building at Family Resource Home Care. “I want to create an environment of compassion. It’s about walking in the shoes of caregivers, clients, and staff, and leading with empathy.”
From being a wheelchair-bound client at 15 to leading an entire branch, Alicia’s story is a remarkable example of resilience, compassion, and growth. Her inspiring home care journey demonstrates how lived experience can shape stronger leaders and create deeper connections. At Family Resource Home Care, Alicia continues to turn her story into action, ensuring caregivers feel supported and clients feel truly understood.
