A Path Rooted in Compassion

Rebecca Brummel’s journey into home care began, as many do, from a place of necessity and heart. Years ago, when her child was young, she sought a career that not only provided meaningful work but also allowed her the flexibility to prioritize her child’s needs. That balance led her to caregiving, a role where she could make a direct impact on the lives of others while ensuring she remained present for her family.

“I began working for this company a number of years ago because it afforded me the opportunity to provide meaningful care to others while allowing me to maintain a flexible schedule centered around my child’s needs,” Rebecca shares.

But caregiving wasn’t just a job; it was a calling. With a long history in human services, including roles in state case management, crisis management, and supervision, she always knew she wanted to do more. As her daughter grew older and eventually left for college, Rebecca saw an opportunity to step into a position that merged her past experiences with her deep understanding of caregiving. When the chance to apply for the Client Care Supervisor role came, she didn’t hesitate.

Embracing a New Chapter

Rebecca had already spent years working for the agency when Family Resource Home Care acquired it and transformed it into the Portland West branch. Instead of seeing the transition as an ending, she viewed it as a new chapter—one where she could continue her work in a familiar place but with new opportunities to grow and serve. Rebecca continued to work as a caregiver until 2024 when she applied for the Client Care Supervisor role.

Stepping into her Client Care Supervisor role, Rebecca brought with her something invaluable: firsthand caregiving experience. She understood not only the physical demands of the job but also the emotional weight it carried.

“It is of real benefit to me to have had the opportunity of caregiving experience,” she explains. “It provides me with great insight into the benefits and challenges faced by those providing and receiving such care.”

This perspective allows her to advocate for both caregivers and clients, ensuring that each receives the support they need. She recognizes the sacrifices caregivers make and the deep responsibility they feel for their clients. At the same time, she remains focused on the well-being of those receiving care, always striving to create the best possible outcomes for them.

Advice for Those New to Home Care

Navigating home care—whether as a caregiver or as a client—can be complex. Rebecca believes that one of the most important things to remember is to temper expectations and embrace humanity in caregiving.

“Our caregivers choose to do the difficult work they do because of their genuine desire to improve the lives of others,” she says. “They tend to have tremendous care, concern, and compassion for their clients and ultimately want nothing more than to be of help. However, they are just flawed human beings, like the rest of us. Don’t set extraordinary expectations. Compassion should extend both ways.”

This philosophy is at the core of how she approaches her role. She strives to bridge the gap between caregivers and clients, ensuring that both feel supported, valued and understood.

Rebecca & A Simple Truth: We All Need Each Other

Rebecca’s journey has taught her one fundamental truth about home care—and about life: kindness, effort, and love are the most powerful tools we have.

“To sum it up, we all need one another,” she says. “So be kind, always do your best, and act from a place of love and compassion for others.”

From her early days as a caregiver to her current leadership role, Rebecca Brummel embodies this sentiment in everything she does. Her story is a testament to the power of experience, empathy, and a heart dedicated to service. As she continues her work at Portland West, she remains committed to guiding and supporting both caregivers and clients, ensuring that everyone in the home care community feels seen, heard, and cared for.
