At Family Resource Home Care, we are continually moved by the compassion, quick thinking, and dedication of our caregivers. One powerful story from our Gresham Branch reminds us just how vital their presence can be in a moment of crisis. We are proud to recognize Lifesaver Mariah Benson, whose attentive care and swift actions made a truly life-saving difference for her client.
An Ordinary Visit That Became Critical
What began as a routine visit quickly turned into a high-stakes situation. Mariah Benson, a caregiver from our Gresham Branch, was checking in on her client, when she noticed something was very wrong— her client was unable to walk, and her foot was red and severely swollen. Trusting her instincts and prioritizing the client’s safety, Mariah immediately reached out for help.
Acting with Urgency and Care
Upon describing the symptoms to the office, Mariah was asked whether she believed her client needed to see a doctor. With her client unable to walk downstairs, Mariah agreed that emergency services were necessary. The decision was made to call 911, and with the responsible party’s approval, Mariah stayed by her client’s side, offering reassurance and support until the EMTs arrived.
Mariah didn’t stop there—she kept the office updated every step of the way, even calling to report that her client was on her way to the hospital. Thanks to Mariah’s presence of mind and commitment to her client’s well-being, her client received the urgent care she needed just in time.
A Serious Outcome Prevented
Although her client unfortunately lost a toe due to infection, doctors made it clear that the situation could have been far worse—even life-threatening—if left untreated. Because of Mariah’s attentiveness and willingness to act swiftly, her client’s life was potentially saved.
More Than a Caregiver – Lifesaver Mariah
Mariah Benson demonstrated not only excellent caregiving skills, but also the rare qualities that define a true lifesaver: compassion, courage, and calm under pressure. Her actions remind us that caregivers aren’t just helpers—they are vigilant protectors and powerful advocates for the clients they serve.
