From Caregiver to Caregiver Manager
Katie’s journey in the world of home care is a testament to resilience, dedication, and a deep passion for helping others. From her beginnings as a caregiver to her current role as a Caregiver Manager at Family Resource Home Care in Sunnyside, Katie’s story is filled with personal and professional growth, shaped by her unwavering commitment to making a difference.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing New Roles
Katie began her career as a caregiver, eventually becoming one of the first lead caregivers in Tri-Cities. However, her trajectory took an unexpected turn when she was involved in a rollover car accident, necessitating a period of light duty in the office. During this time, Katie helped with scheduling, phone support, care plans, and caregiver orientations. Reflecting on this period, Katie shared, “My light duty was helping with the schedule, helping with phones, care plans, and doing care plan orientation with caregivers or going to events and helping there.”
Once she was ready to return to full duty, Katie applied for the Caregiver Manager position in Pendleton, despite it being a two-hour drive from her home. She later went on maternity leave but continued to support various branches, including Spokane, Walla Walla, Tri-Cities, Pendleton, and Yakima. She also dabbled in Client Care Specialist roles and marketing with Regional Business Development Manager Mary in Yakima. This June marked her sixth year with Family Resource Home Care, showcasing her dedication and loyalty to the organization.
A Personal Motivation
Katie’s motivation to enter the field of home care stemmed from personal experiences. She earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification at the Veterans Home in The Dalles. Katie felt inspired to embark on the home care journey because of witnessing her great-grandmother’s inadequate care in a nursing home. She also worked in dementia lock-down units and as a med tech at an assisted living facility in Tri-Cities.
Supporting and Guiding Caregivers
In her role as a Caregiver Manager, Katie leverages her personal caregiving experiences to guide and support the caregivers under her supervision. She believes in the importance of building personal connections with her team. “Personal experiences always help me to illustrate the common ground that yes, I am your supervisor and I’ve been here for six years, but I get life happens,” Katie explained. She emphasizes a balanced approach, where being a friend is just as crucial as being a manager. “Happy client, happy caregiver, happy care manager,” she said, underscoring her holistic philosophy.
Katie is also a keen observer of people, adapting her approach to meet the unique needs of each caregiver. “I’m a people watcher and I learn people’s characteristics and communication style,” she noted. This ability allows her to build her team up with understanding and empathy, creating an environment where caregivers feel valued and supported.
Advice for Aspiring Caregivers
When asked for advice, Katie highlighted the importance of passion and commitment in caregiving. “Caregiving is more than just a paycheck,” she stated. She acknowledges that Family Resource Home Care’s support provides peace of mind, work-life balance, and a supportive environment. Katie explained that you have to be a truly selfless person and think big picture because we are all going to be there eventually and what kind of care would we want in these situations?
