At Family Resource Home Care, we believe every caregiver’s story shapes the heart of our mission. Few journeys capture that truth more vividly than Sarah Haney’s path in home care in Colville. From her early days as a caregiver at just 18 years old to her current role as Branch Manager at the Colville Branch, Sarah’s story is one of dedication, compassion, and leadership.
Early Roots in Caregiving
Sarah’s journey into home care in Colville began when she earned her Home Care Aide (HCA) certification at 18. Inspired by her mother, who worked as a CNA at the hospital in Colville, Sarah felt drawn to the field. “At 18, I became a caregiver, and I worked for two years in that role,” Sarah recalls. “It gave me such a strong foundation and helped me understand what clients and caregivers experience every single day.”
Growing Beyond the Frontlines
While she loved the personal connections, Sarah wanted to make a broader impact. When a receptionist and scheduling position opened with Beneficial (now part of Family Resource Home Care), she applied. “I wanted to help more people at a larger level,” she explains. That role opened the door to endless opportunities.
Sarah didn’t just stop at scheduling—she was quickly cross-trained across HR, office administration, and client services. “I jumped into every role in the office,” she shares. “I learned HR, scheduling, filled in wherever I was needed, and it gave me such a good understanding of everyone’s position.” This hands-on experience shaped her leadership style and prepared her for her next step.
From Client Care Supervisor to Branch Manager
Sarah’s favorite role along the way was serving as a Client Care Supervisor. “I really liked that position because I got to work directly with clients and do some traveling,” she says. The role deepened her appreciation for the challenges and joys of serving aging adults in rural communities.
When her Branch Manager moved on, Sarah was promoted to the leadership position. Today, she brings her full spectrum of experience to the Colville Branch. “Having grace for people and understanding what every role goes through has really helped me grow as a leader,” Sarah reflects.
Leading with Empathy and Perspective
Sarah’s time as a caregiver continues to guide her leadership. “Being in a home with a client and seeing it from the caregiver perspective helps me deal with things on the admin side,” she says. Her first-hand experience allows her to relate to caregivers and clients in ways that few administrators can.
She also draws on her knowledge of the Colville community. “Working in various positions, especially in a small community, really helps with knowing resources,” she explains. Her deep local connections are a tremendous asset for clients and caregivers alike.
Advice for Clients and Caregivers
Sarah has practical and heartfelt advice for those new to home care in Colville. For clients, she acknowledges that inviting a caregiver into the home can feel daunting: “It can be nerve-wracking to have a stranger in your home, but every client I’ve worked with ends up feeling relief. It’s amazing to see the difference once care begins.”
To caregivers, Sarah offers encouragement and realism. “It can be a hard job, but it’s so rewarding,” she says. “Sometimes it’s tough just getting to the client’s house, and you might not be in the best mood. But the minute you connect with the client—hear their stories, share time—it makes it all worth it. Sometimes you might be the only person they see that week, and your presence can make their whole week.”
A Commitment to Rural Communities
At the heart of Sarah’s passion is her commitment to small towns like Colville. “I am loyal to home care because it’s such a rewarding type of career,” she explains. “It’s hard sometimes, but I find satisfaction in solving problems and finding resolutions with people.”
She continues, “I like being in a small town and helping rural communities. There are so many aging adults in these areas, and it feels good to give back to them.”
