A Calling to Caregiving
Elizabeth Dillworth has always been a natural caregiver, even before she entered the profession. Her journey into caregiving began with working with individuals with special needs, where she discovered her passion for helping those who couldn’t help themselves. “Helping people that weren’t able to help themselves sparked my interest in this career,” she says. Cooking for others and bringing joy through food has always been a major part of her life, and she recognized that caregiving allowed her to make a tangible difference in people’s daily lives.
When Elizabeth joined Family Resource Home Care at the McMinnville Branch, she immediately felt the difference. “The orientation blew my mind,” she recalls. “I felt so supported, and I could see that this company genuinely cared about both caregivers and clients.” This sense of belonging and support gave her the confidence to take on new challenges and grow within the company.
Growing with Family Resource Home Care
Elizabeth initially joined Family Resource Home Care as a caregiver, but her leadership skills quickly became evident. With a background in management in other industries, she had initially stepped away from leadership roles to find better work-life balance. However, her natural ability to mentor and train others shone through. “Even as a caregiver, I was given opportunities to train others, and I loved it,” she says. When she was promoted to Lead Caregiver, she embraced the opportunity to learn and meet new people.
When the role of Caregiver Manager was offered to her, Elizabeth was hesitant at first. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take on a management role again,” she admits. “But I realized how much I enjoyed training caregivers and getting to know clients, and it just made sense.” Her firsthand experience as a caregiver gives her a unique perspective in her new role. “I know exactly what caregivers face on a daily basis, and that helps me guide and support them better.” The transition has been rewarding, and she now feels confident in her ability to bridge the gap between caregivers and office staff.
Supporting Caregivers with Compassion and Understanding
One of Elizabeth’s core beliefs is that caregivers need just as much support as the clients they care for. “I still call myself a caregiver, because that never really ends,” she says. Recently, she supported two caregivers whose clients were on hospice. “I knew they needed someone to back them up, so I visited both families, helped them process what was happening, and reassured them. The caregivers hugged me and thanked me for being there. It reminded me why this work is so important.”
Elizabeth emphasizes the human side of caregiving. “We aren’t just stocking shelves; we are taking care of someone. That takes responsibility, creativity, and heart.” She believes in treating caregivers with the same compassion and respect that they provide to clients. “One time, I personally picked up a caregiver and took them to a shift because they had car trouble. Everybody wins when we support each other.”
Elizabeth’s Advice for Caregivers and Clients
For caregivers, Elizabeth’s advice is simple: “Follow your heart. You are not just a caregiver—you are a companion, a friend, and a source of comfort. It’s okay to get close to your clients because they need that relationship.” She encourages caregivers to build rapport and reassure clients, especially those who feel isolated.
To clients considering care, she urges them to take a leap of faith. “There are good people in this world who want to help you. You never know what you truly need until you allow yourself to receive help. Let caregivers be there for you, and you may find not just assistance but genuine friendships.”
