Gabriel Finding Meaning in a Career Shift
Gabriel’s story isn’t one of chasing titles—it’s about chasing impact. Today, he serves as the Caregiver Manager at Family Resource Home Care’s Tacoma, Washington branch, but just months ago, he was stepping into homes as a Lead Caregiver, building trust with clients and offering support where it was needed most. His transition from hands-on caregiving to leadership wasn’t planned—but it’s a natural fit for someone whose core motivation is to help others thrive.
Leaving Retail Behind for Something Real
Before his time in caregiving, Gabriel worked as a manager in retail. He was leading teams and hitting goals, but the work left him feeling disconnected. “It didn’t feel meaningful,” Gabriel reflects. “There was no work-life balance, and it was affecting my personal life.” He knew something needed to change. So he made a courageous choice—not one driven by pay or convenience, but by the desire to feel purposeful again. Having served in the Navy earlier in life, Gabriel understood the value of service, and he was ready to find a new way to give back.
Making an Impact as a Caregiver
He joined Family Resource Home Care as a caregiver in Silverdale, Washington, quickly becoming a favorite among clients. Whether filling in last-minute or caring for regulars, Gabriel made a lasting impression. Clients requested him back after his shifts, a reflection of the trust and comfort he brought into their lives. As he grew in the role, Gabriel naturally stepped up, taking on more responsibility and proving his leadership potential.
A Natural Transition to Leadership in Tacoma
When a Caregiver Manager role opened in Tacoma, Gabriel’s name came up immediately. His past management experience, combined with his success as a caregiver, made the opportunity a perfect next step. He applied, was hired, and since February, has been embracing the challenges and rewards of his new role.
Supporting Caregivers Through Firsthand Experience
Now leading a team, Gabriel draws heavily on his caregiving experience. “It helps me navigate situations and support new caregivers better,” he shares. “When someone’s just starting, I can relate. I remember what it’s like to learn everything for the first time.” He’s especially focused on being patient and encouraging with new hires, guiding them through the nuances of care with the insight only a former caregiver can offer. He’s also impressed by the improvements he’s seen in Family Resource’s in-house training programs, saying they make a big difference in preparing people for the real-world aspects of the job.
Words of Encouragement for Caregivers and Clients
For Gabriel, it all comes down to purpose. He reminds caregivers to lead with heart: “You have to come into this work for the right reasons. It’s about helping people. That’s what makes it worthwhile.” His advice to clients is just as thoughtful. “A lot of people are hesitant to ask for help because they’ve done everything on their own for so long. But it’s okay to accept support. It can be a big step, but it can also be the first step toward something better.”
