Did you know Family Resource Home Care helps seniors and families enjoy vacations? You may also not know that taking vacations is actually vitally important to our health. This is especially true for seniors.

There are numerous ways in which Family Resource helps seniors and their families safely and comfortably enjoy vacations. Below are just 5 ways we support our clients in making vacation memories and why they’re so important:

  1. Our caregivers can stay home with clients while their families travel, by providing temporary live-in care or daily visits. The respite provided to enable families and loved ones to vacation is important given that a study showed women who vacationed less than every six years have a significantly higher risk of heart problems compared to women who vacation at least twice a year. Another study showed that men who did not take an annual vacation had a 20 percent higher risk of death and a 30 percent greater risk of death from heart disease.
  2. Our caregivers also accompany clients and their families on their vacations. Our 2019 Platinum Caregiver of the Year Lawrence Thuku traveled with his client and family to Hawaii, Florida, and Arizona. His presence allowed the entire family to enjoy time together because, with Lawrence’s help, the client was safe and living each day to the fullest.
  3. According to Dr. Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., ABPP, president and founder of the Brain Health Center, Inc., “Because it challenges the brain with new and different experiences and environments, travel is an important behavior that promotes brain health and builds brain resilience across the lifespan.” Read here about our caregiver Jo-Ann who helped her client stay mentally active through travel as he aged.
  4. With eight Family Resource locations across WA & ID, families can arrange for care in different cities while they travel. By calling ahead, we can find a temporary caregiver to support families while they attend weddings or take vacations across the state. See our locations here.
  5. Vacations are shown to reduce stress for seniors. Relieving stress and anxiety helps to decrease feelings of loneliness, frustration, and depression in seniors. And, with more physical movement and social interaction on vacations blood flow is increased to the brain, which helps fend off dementia. Our caregivers drive and can help with transportation for clients to visit friends and family on nearby vacations to support these interactions.
