A Brighter Today - Allowing a Couple to Remain “Real People” in Their Own Home.
Maurine and Laurie Willoughby met in Yakima in the 7th grade. They were married 64 years ago and moved to an apartment in the University District soon after Laurie signed on with Pan American. Eventually, they had two children and moved into a home they built for their family in Normandy Park.
Maurine wants to stay in her home she knows and loves for as long as she can. “Living in my own home makes me feel like a real person,” she says. At 86, it’s growing harder to do all the things she’s accustomed to, such as driving, gardening, and cooking. When Laurie developed dementia and Maurine could no longer help him in the shower, she knew she needed help. A friend at church told her about Family Resource Home Care, and today, four years later, Maurine considers their caregiver, Stephan, a part of her family.
"Stephan is so good. I don’t know what we’d do without him. He helps us in every conceivable way. Neither of us can drive anymore, and Stephan takes us to the doctor, shopping, and to run errands. He gets Laurie dressed, showered, and shaved. I feel safe now.”
When Maurine developed shingles and was hospitalized for an esophageal hemorrhage almost a year ago, she needed additional help. Family Resource Home Care sent them an additional caregiver, Paulina.
“Paulina makes me feel like ‘Queen of the May,’” Maurine says. “I don’t have to cook anymore. And, she will sing a song with me when I’m down and when I’m happy. She’s becoming a part of our family too.”
