Staying At Home - Giving a Loving Couple the Support They Need.
Tim Wheeler was in the prime of his life at age 41. He adored his wife, Diane, who was the financial director of a start-up firm and enjoyed gourmet cooking, cycling, sailing and gardening. He was a trained air force pilot and always eager to learn new things. As Diane, says, “We had it all.”
Then one morning, when Tim and Diane were vacationing on Lake Shasta, Tim woke up with a bad headache. It turned out that he was having a stroke. He was later diagnosed with “Locked in Syndrome,” a condition where your brain is completely functional, but you can’t make any voluntary movement. From that point on, Tim would be limited to communicating with eye movement and through a computer by typing with his right thumb.
After managing Tim’s care in a nursing home in the Bay Area for 15 years, Diane and Tim decided it was time for a change. They moved to the Northwest, where Tim’s daughters and grandchildren were, and remodeled a house to give Tim the best possible home care environment. “I didn’t want it to be like the nursing home, or for Tim to be stuck in the bedroom,” Diane recalls. “I wanted him to be part of our daily activity.”
When Diane realized she could not care for Tim alone, a friend recommended Family Resource Home Care. Today, eight years later, Diane believes that the additional care has helped improve the quality of both their lives.
